  • Drowned Alive

    Posted on by Brian Dubé

David Blaine is a controversial magician turned performance artist with acts involving extreme privation, enacted in public places. More popular in NYC than anywhere else, thousands have come to visit him as he lives submerged in a sphere of water for seven days in the plaza at Lincoln Center. For the finale on Monday night, he will perform before a live TV audience, bound in chains underwater while holding his breath for more than nine minutes as he breaks free (hopefully).

All this week, the crowds around him were lining up to pass close to him, with many trying to communicate with him, holding up pictures and cards, and touching the glass of his tank. He seemed to be very happy for the company and the attention, interacting in a mime-like way with his public. Here are more photos, a link to his website, which has many articles and photos, and a video:

  • Easter Parade

I had never been to an Easter Parade before, much less the one in New York City along Fifth Avenue, which they close from 10AM to 4PM for 8 city blocks. Although it is known for its “excesses,” I still was not prepared for what turned out to be quite an outlandish affair. I got off to a beautiful quiet morning opposite St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which had Masses all day.

The parade is really more of a gathering, with participants and viewers co-mingling all day. The whole event really became more intense as the day went on. The dress ranged from the elegant to the spectacular. I hope you enjoy the collage – I took so many photos and the displays were so varied, it was impossible to settle on one image.

  • Extreme Cadillac

The great weather today brought crowds of people out to the streets, and everyone was showing off what they had, especially the owner of this customized Cadillac parked in front of a Mexican restaurant (with its themed taxicab) in the West Village. Many stopped, looked, and took photos, but no one seemed to know who the owner was or anything about it. No luxury was spared. When something so garish is executed with such care, it sometimes achieves a certain beauty. Note the fur-covered dashboard!

  • Live Poultry Market

Amazing for Manhattan, isn’t it? This Live Poultry Market is at 198 Delancey in the Lower East Side, a neighborhood which now also has very trendy shops and residences. The contrasts in this city can be astounding – I couldn’t resist going down there and showing that there’s more to New York than even many residents know. Most New Yorkers whom I have told about this are quite surprised. Apparently the poultry is slaughtered on premises. I was put off somewhat by the place; rather shocking for a city dweller. More photos here.

Update (2008): To my understanding, this place is now closed.
