Lunchtime on a Skyscraper

This sculpture, mounted on truck, is frequently displayed in SoHo. Titled Lunchtime on a Skyscraper – A Tribute to American Heroes, this piece was created by sculptor Sergio Furnari, who has a studio in Long Island City (Queens). The men are life-size, so the whole thing is quite startling and unexpected when first seen and usually draws the interest of many people passing by. The sculpture was inspired by a well-known photo of iron workers in 1932 taking a lunchtime break while building Rockefeller Center.

I thought they were real people in disguise (like those that move when you drop some money into their box and then keep still for the next) sitting for some event…

  2. So did I…thats a great catch. If you go to my blog today, you will see a ‘tribute’ to New York’!

    I love it!

  5. A lot more closer to the ground than the real thing which suits me fine. Nice way to imagine the real thing.

  6. Great sculpture!

  7. The photo that this sculpture is based on is a wonderful classic b/w shot, typical of many of the photos of skyscrapers being built at that time. Surprisingly, I was unable to find a good copy online to link to. This is the best I could find: http://www.monsoongalleries.com/artists/furnari/lunchtimephoto.html

  8. Absolutely fascinating

  9. Great shot! Love it. The details of these workers are so realistic. All the workers have a different attitude. Looks like they were working during summer! GENIAL!!

I was just reading an article in a swedish newspaper about the 1932 photo, and then a few minutes later I find this photo! Amazing artwork and a good photo.

  11. I have seen the original photo so many times that I have grown quite sick about it. But seeing this interpretation made me change my mind =) Nice photo aswell!
